In my last post I wrote about the reasons people give not to have an holistic treatment. Having a treatment can be a great experience and usually once you start it becomes a regular occurrence. But I want to follow up from the last post with some of the insecurities people feel they need to apologise for when they arrive at the table, most of them we as therapists, don't actually notice until they are pointed out us! There is absolutely no need to apologise when you arrive for a treatment, so lets break it down into the top 5 and then forget about all those negatives.
1.Sorry I forgot to shave my legs
Probably the biggest of the bunch from the girls, they will arrive apologising and excusing why their legs are hairy and not freshly shaved/waxed. Girls we massage men too! And I personally am yet to meet a man who freshly shaved his legs before arriving for a massage. You don't need to go to that effort for your therapist. We probably won't notice unless you tell us.
2. Sorry my feet are ugly
Almost all of my first time reflexology clients tell me this, even the perfectly normal footed people. Truth is, we don't particularly care if you have a callous here and there or bunions (I have them too), what we are interested in is using your feet to help with all your internal troubles. Every foot is completely different and we are not there to judge you on appearance. Let your foot hang ups go and enjoy the soothing reflexology treatment.
3. Sorry but I need to fart
Actually, nobody will ever tell us this, people will hold passing wind as long as possible. What people often overlook is that massage therapy (especially aromatherapy and reflexology) will induce the passing of wind because it works on the digestive system within the body. Very often after passing wind a client will apologise, its not a problem just let it go, its your body releasing a build up of toxins, its natural and perfectly acceptable. Never try to hold it in, it just undoes all of the good work we are trying to do.
4. I'm sorry I'm so big
Big clients, small clients, the body is the body. Again, everyone is different and once you are on the massage table you are a body to be worked on just like any other, whether you are large or small. What we, as therapists want to do is help that body to function better, we are not there to judge the size of it. Just relax and let us work our magic in making you feel better.
5. Sorry was I snoring/drooling?
My favourite type of apology, this means the client relaxed right into the massage and nodded off while on the table. Falling asleep helps with the work we do as the body heals while it is sleeping. This is exactly what we are trying to achieve, honestly, there is absolutely no need to apologise. Just relax doze off and allow the healing benefits of your holistic treatment to wash over your body.
As a Complimentary Therapist I am a great believer that holistic therapies can cure all your ails. People usually walk away from an appointment feeling much better than they walked in; whether its a massage, a reflexology treatment or any other. But, as a therapist I have heard so many excuses for not having a treatment that I feel the need to clarify this situation. So lets have a look at why people may feel that holistic therapy is not for them.
1. I cant really afford it right now
This is probably the most common reason. When people see something as a luxury and not a necessity then they tend not to include it in a budget. But, what if in the long run it reduces trips to the GP. Would that not be a sound investment? Prescriptions can be expensive, especially if there are a variety of pills to be taken. Holistic therapy can reduce stress, tension, prevent aches and pains and improve general health. Better to invest in your health now rather than later and enjoy the experience!
2. I don't have time right now
I completely understand this one as I am constantly busy. But, I take an hour each day for 'me' time so I can recharge my batteries and find the energy I need to carry on. Scheduling some time for yourself is an absolute necessity, a car will not run on an empty fuel tank. A holistic treatment will calm the mind so you can think with clarity and will calm the body so you can go forward with a full tank of fuel. Just think of it as an important activity that you need to make time for and then relax and restore yourself to your full potential.
3. I don't like to be touched
This was my excuse for years and it is always people who have never had a treatment before. My personal reasons were I was uncomfortable with my own body, a little self conscious and thought i would be judged. My first ever treatment was nerve racking but once I overcome the fear it actually kick started the path am on now! I understand those first time nerves, its natural, but therapists are trained to high standard and always professional and definitely not judging, I promise. We want you to enjoy the experience and relax.
4. I don't know what it is
There are many different treatments that fall under the category of holistic therapy and many different therapists offering them. If you are interested in something but don't fully understand what it is do some research, look online or ask friends. Above all call the therapist and ask, chances are they love what they do and will be very open to explaining everything in fine detail. I love my job and love it when I get the opportunity to vocalise what I do.
5. But I had a bad experience once
I hear this quite a lot "I went for a Swedish massage and the therapist applied too much/not enough pressure and so I don't have them any more." What? This is insane, a bad experience with a therapist means you don't go back to that particular therapist, don't write off an entire lifestyle because of one bad experience. I compare it to never going on holiday again because a flight was delayed once. People are different, therapists are different, find one that you are comfortable with and take it from there, the only thing that can come from it is good health and feeling great.
